The Organization
The organization is composed of 10 individuals including a Chairperson and Secretary elected by the other 9 members of the Board. The Board is responsible for the overall management of the Centre and meets once every two months to review the physical and financial management of the Centres. The Board includes a Coordinator, Financial Advisor, Administrative Assistant, Education Professional and Social Worker or Health Professional. The Centre began with four main issues in 2004: Nutritious Feeding—Building a kitchen stove fueled by wood with special cooking pots to provide two meals daily for 65 children and 11 staff. The Centre purchased plates, mugs, spoons, dining tables and benches. Two cooks were employed initially. What does the future hold? The possibility of a Trust being formed to purchase the school property and adjoining plots to give the school stability and to provide additional development for future years.
Basic Education—The Centre purchased tables, chairs, books, pencils, general school requirements and activity/sports equipment. We currently employ 3 teachers. Twenty children have been helped into government schools who all require school uniforms, help with transport and lunches. These children still visit the Centre on Saturday.
Health Care—A qualified doctor and nurse volunteer their services and the Centre also receives help from the local hospital. A provision is made of vaccinations against common child illnesses. A few of the children are being treated for AIDS and related illnesses. We also provide counseling to guardians on AIDS and family planning.
Home for selected abused children—After the construction of an upper floor to the Centre, we now have sleeping accommodations for 20 children. The Centre purchased 10 bunk beds, 60 blankets, 40 mattresses, as well as towels, sheets, and pillows, etc. The Centre now employs 3 house mothers, 2 laundry/cleaning staff and a security guard.
