CURRENT PROJECTS...

Our Achievements from 2005—2007

We have had many new developments such as a fire alarm system, panic buttons, fire escape, lockers for all of the boarders and a new gardening program. After acquiring a new plot adjacent to the Centre, we fenced all the property with a chain link fence for safety and privacy. This is currently serving as a clothes-drying area and a small vegetable garden. We have constructed a chicken coop which holds between 200-400 chickens and a milking goat pen which will keep 3 or 4 goats.

Rachael, the founder, has also given the children a cow, which provides for their daily milk supply and has recently given birth. The livestock will help our children learn responsibility skills and provide nutrition from the milk and eggs.

We have also rented some land in the neighborhood that is used purposely for the production of basic vegetables which helps sustain our food supplies and also serve to help these children in skills for food production and survival.

New plans are underway for the development of new buildings on the property that have been acquired/purchased solely for the purposes of the Limuru Children’s Centre program. These will serve as ‘homes’ to those permanently sheltered here and will help to create a family unit atmosphere that serves and supports them better. The existing buildings will be refurbished and restructured to serve the program mainly with vocational training and pre-school classes; as well as moving the kitchen to a larger room. Currently, two of these plots are used as a football field and space for a car park within the compound.

The program has employed a qualified social worker who is in touch with all the families supported. She also keeps in regular contact with the government offices that deal with children monitoring—Children Department in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Children Courts and Child Welfare and support organizations.

The Centre has acquired the services of a trained guidance counselor on a regular basis who is dealing with the psychological needs of these children. A trained nurse from the local government hospital will come regularly to help maintain records of the children’s development, immunizations, growth monitoring, vitamins, nutrition and general treatments. These children are showing tremendous improvement and results are very encouraging.

We have an extra house mother (now 3 with one sub) to help cope with the needs and demands of 33 kids of different backgrounds and ages. A qualified teacher is on hand after school to help them with their homework and educational motivation and support needs.

The LCC participated in an Environment Clean-Up Day in July. We are involved in local forums, which deal with child issues like abuse, negligent and violence against children.

Our Achievements from 2008—2009

We have had many new developments such as new stoves, an acre of gardening, a new donkey and cart, new mattresses and painted bunkbeds for the boarders. We are still in the process of building new dormitories on the adjacent lot. $45,000 is still needed for this project!

Once the dorms are built the current building will serve as vocational training classes and a new HIV baby home! We are so excited since so many babies with HIV are literally discarded.  But with proper care, nutrition, medical attention and a lot of love they will have beautiful lives.

We've added 6 boarders to our home! And we love having them. Three came to us because their former home was closed down due to inappropriate conduct of the staff. We are thankful they are safe and integrating wonderfully in with our family.

The Children of LCC, the Management Committee, the local community and friends of LCC, sincerely thank all our friends and well-wishers, who without their continued support and contributions, this program would not be able to help the destitute and vulnerable children in this community. We thank you so much and God bless you all!
